Probiotics are those single-celled living microorganisms or bacteria that live in the host and create lots of benefits for it. As humans, we have

probiotics in our body that we sometimes supplement with other food and drink products. This is because the benefits of probiotics have been made known throughout the years.

The fact that probiotics are good for our body had been established a long time ago. But only recently did more scientific studies start coming out to back up that claim. The species of probiotics in our body number in the thousands and most of them can be found in our digestive tract. The human body is home to many kinds of bacteria, some good and some bad, but probiotics certainly have the most health benefits.

Much of the benefits of probiotics have something to do with defeating the bad bacteria and preventing their numbers from increasing. Probiotics also protect our body from bacteria coming from the outside. Another benefit is that they help reduce lactose intolerant and they can even prevent certain kinds of cancers. Probiotics also help to reduce cholesterol and high blood pressure. They also work with our immune system in keeping infections away. They are good for the digestive tract as they give relief to diarrhea and irritable bowel syndrome. They also help our system to absorb the nutrients better.

A big benefit given by probiotics is their ability to reduce the risk of cancer. There is a strain in it called lactobacillus bulgaricus. A study was done on rats and it revealed that this strain can prevent the mutation of cells in the colon. But few tests have been done on humans to prove this.

Probiotics are also good for the heart because as mentioned, they lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels. They are known to be able to break down the bile in our gut, thereby preventing it from being absorbed in the blood stream as cholesterol. The reduction in blood pressure can be attributed to the peptides found in probiotics. The peptides serve as inhibitors of the Angiotensin-converting enzyme which is helpful in defeating hypertension and heart diseases.

Probiotics can also prevent the increase of pathogens because they give them a lesser chance of subsisting. They also help plasma cells to develop which are essential in increasing our immune levels. That is why probiotics are considered as helpful in preventing rotavirus infections in kids as well as certain respiratory tract infections.

Other strains of probiotics are also good at decreasing inflammation and reduce the risk of malabsorption of trace minerals that are present in grains and nuts.

Although the benefits of probiotics are plenty, there are times that they can be bad for someone. These are namely people who have weak immune systems or those that, because of an illness, has developed lactobacillus septicaemia. This is a fatal disease. Probiotics can also cause harm to people suffering from acute pancreatitis. The University of Western Australia has released a study that says children given more probiotics are prone to being more reactive to certain allergens.

Remember that not all the claims about probiotics are supported scientifically. The results have been somewhat conflicting and that is why it is important that we only take everything in moderation.
